The Origins of Cosplay An Exploration into Costumed Play and Creativity

Cosplay traces its roots back to early 20th-century science fiction conventions. The first known instance occurred in 1939 at the 1st World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) in New York City, where attendees Forrest J. Ackerman and Myrtle R. Douglas wore futuristic costumes.
However, it was Japanese fan culture that truly popularized and coined the term “cosplay” in the 1980s. Nobuyuki Takahashi, founder of Studio Hard, observed the elaborate costumes at the Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon in 1984 and introduced the term “kosupure” (Japanese for cosplay) in his subsequent articles.
